Nagasaki Day: August 9

During World War II (1939- 1945), a plutonium bomb named ‘Fat Man’ was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan on August 9, 1945.
Hiroshima Day is celebrated every year on 9 August in memory of this horrific event.
Three days before this, on 6 August, an atomic bomb named ‘Little Boy’ was dropped on
Hiroshima.

BCCI announces Rs 1 crore to Tokyo Olympic gold medalist

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced cash prizes as a reward for the winners of Tokyo Olympics 2020.
Gold Medalist (Neeraj Chopra): Rs 1 crore
Silver Medalist (Mirabai Chanu and Ravi Dahiya): Rs 50 lakh
Bronze medalists (PV Sindhu, Lovlina Borgohain and Bajrang Punia): Rs 25 lakh
Indian Men’s Hockey Team (Bronze Medal): Rs 1.25 crore

  • Apart from this, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has announced a prize money of Rs 6 crore to Neeraj and Rs 4 crore to Ravi Dahiya.
  • IPL team Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has also announced a grant of Rs 1 crore to Neeraj Chopra.
  • In addition, CSK will also make a special jersey number 8758 (the javelin was thrown 87.58 meters away in the final).
  • Indian educational technology company Byju’s has announced Rs 2 crore to gold medalist Neeraj Chopra and Rs 1 crore to other winners.
  • Recently, the Indian Olympic Association (IOC) has announced prize money for coaches of athletes who won medals in Tokyo Olympics.

  • To the coach of the bronze medalist player: Rs 7.5 lakh
  • At the same time, the gold medalist of Tokyo Olympics will get 75 lakh rupees.
  • 40 lakh to the silver medalist and
  • 25 lakh has been announced for the bronze medalist.

The country’s nuclear power capacity is likely to reach 22,480 MW from 6,780 MW.

According to Dr Jitendra Singh, Minister of Atomic Energy and Space, India’s nuclear power capacity is likely to reach 22,480 MW by 2031 from 6,780 MW at present.
There are currently 22 reactors operating with a total capacity of 6,780 MW.
In addition, 10 nuclear power reactors with a capacity of 8000 MW are under construction.

On 8 August 2021, the 79th anniversary of the “Quit India Movement Day” or “August Revolution Day” started by Mahatma Gandhi is being celebrated.
The Quit India Movement was started on 8 August 1942 at the Mumbai session of the All India Congress Committee.

Governor can grant pardon to prisoners according to Supreme Court

Recently, the Supreme Court of India said that the Governor can grant pardon to prisoners even before they are jailed for 14 years.
Thus the Supreme Court also held that the Governor’s power to grant pardon overlaps with the provision made under Section 433A of the ‘Code of Criminal Procedure’ (CrPC), which states that the prisoner should be given a pardon only after 14 years of imprisonment. Pardon can be granted.
