National Sports Day is celebrated every year on 29 August to mark the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, hockey player of India.
The first National Sports Day was celebrated in the year 2012.
Major Dhyan Chand: Major Dhyan Chand is also known as ‘The Magician of Hockey’.
He was part of the Indian hockey team that won three Olympic gold medals (Amsterdam Olympics 1928, Los Angeles Olympics 1932, Berlin Olympics 1936).
Major Dhyan Chand was awarded the Padma Bhushan, the country’s third highest civilian honor, in the year 1956.
Recently ‘Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award’ has been renamed as ‘Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award’.


International Day Against Nuclear Testing: 29 August

International Day Against Nuclear Testing is observed every year on 29 August.
This day was celebrated for the first time in the year 2010.
India conducted its first underground nuclear test on 18 May 1974 in Pokhran, Rajasthan.
This test was named ‘Smiling Buddha’.
Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT): This is a treaty under which nuclear tests are banned.
Establishment of CTBT: 24 September 1996
It has been signed by 178 countries.
India and Pakistan have not signed the CTBT.

Uttar Pradesh’s first Ayush University to be built in Gorakhpur
For this, the President of India, Kovind, laid the foundation stone of AYUSH University in Gorakhpur on 28 August 2021.
The name of this university is ‘Mahayogi Guru Gorakhnath Ayush University’.
It will be the third university in Gorakhpur after Deendayal Upadhyaya Gorakhpur University (DDU) and Madan Mohan Malaviya Technical University (MMMUT).

NER District SDG Index Report 2021 – 22 released by NITI Aayog

Recently NITI Aayog and Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region have released the North Eastern Region District Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Index 2021-22.
Top – 03 Ranking in the Index:

In the ranking of 103 districts, Kiphire district of Nagaland has been ranked last.
The North Eastern Region (NER) District SDG Index ranks the districts of the eight states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura.

Indian players won medals in Tokyo Paralympics in 2020

Bhavaniben Patel won a silver medal in the women’s table tennis singles event at the Tokyo Paralympics in 2020.
With this, she has become the first Indian woman to win a medal in table tennis and the second Indian woman Paralympic player after Deepa Malik to win a medal.
High jump athlete Nishad Kumar won the silver medal.
Dallas Wise of America also won the silver medal as both he and Kumar jumped 2.06m.
Para athlete Vinod Kumar won the bronze medal in the F-52 category of disc throw.
But now their result has been put on hold.
Yogesh Kathunia won the silver medal in the F-56 category of discus throw.
19-year-old Avani Lekhara from Jaipur won the gold medal in the women’s 10m Air Rifle SH1 event.
This is India’s first gold medal in shooting at the Paralympics.
Devendra Jhanjharia and Sunder Singh Gurjar won silver and bronze medals respectively in the javelin throw (Javelin throw) F-46 category.
Devendra Jhanjharia holds the record of winning gold twice for India in Athens Paralympic (2004) and Rio (2016) Paralympics.

Army Sports Institute, Pune renamed as “Neeraj Chopra Stadium”

Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh renamed the Army Sports Institute Stadium as “Neeraj Chopra Stadium” during his visit to Army Sports Institute (ASI), Pune.
Neeraj Chopra: In the javelin throw event at the Tokyo Olympics, Haryana’s Neeraj Chopra won the gold medal for India in the javelin throw final with a throw of 87.58 meters.
With this, Neeraj Chopra has become the second Indian after Abhinav Bindra (Beijing Olympics 2008 shooting) to win an individual gold medal.
Recently the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) announced to celebrate August 7 as “Javelin Throw Day” in honor of Neeraj Chopra.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has roped in Neeraj Chopra in a campaign to prevent digital banking frauds and alert people.
